When gum disease goes untreated, brushing and flossing aren’t always enough to prevent further damage. A gum graft can restore your gum line and lower the risk of more serious complications like loose teeth. At Trinity Dental Care, Gayathri Gunda, DDS, and the team have years of experience performing gum grafts. To learn more about gum grafting, call the office in Bedford, Texas, or request an appointment online today.
A gum graft is an outpatient procedure that replaces damaged or receding gum tissue. Gum disease, such as gingivitis or periodontitis, causes the gums to pull away from the teeth, exposing their roots. When your tooth roots are exposed, they’re especially sensitive and more likely to decay.
A gum graft prevents your gums from receding and restores them to a healthy condition. When performed by an experienced dentist, the procedure can preserve your smile for years to come.
At Trinity Dental Care, the team offers three types of gum grafts:
During a free gingival graft, your provider removes a piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth and stitches it over an area of receding gum tissue. Over time, the graft fuses with your gums, preventing further recession.
During a connective tissue graft, your provider opens a small flap in the roof of your mouth and removes a thin layer of tissue from underneath. Then, they stitch the tissue around a damaged portion of your gum line, preventing further recession.
During a pedicle graft, your provider cuts a healthy flap of gum tissue next to diseased or receding gums. They stretch the healthy gum tissue over the damaged area and suture it in place, encouraging the body’s natural healing process. Pedicle grafts are very successful because they don’t cut off blood flow to another area of your mouth.
After a gum graft, it’s normal to experience some mild discomfort and sensitivity. For the first week or two, only eat soft foods like yogurt, scrambled eggs, or mashed potatoes. Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to prevent infection, and don’t brush or floss until your provider says it’s safe to do so.
To determine the type of gum graft that will most benefit you, the team at Trinity Dental Care conducts an oral exam, reviews your dental health history, and asks about your symptoms. Once they gather the necessary information, the team develops a custom gum graft treatment plan tailored to your needs.
